"Temporary Spaces": Exploring the Fragility of a Changing World

What is a temporary space? Is it a shelter, a place of transit, a waiting room, a temporary home—or even the human body itself, constantly evolving? These questions lie at the heart of "Temporary Spaces," a group exhibition opening on July 9, 2026, at Bifnocho Cultural Space in Tel Aviv, inviting visitors to reflect on one of the defining realities of our time: instability.
Curated by Vera Geylis and Vera Konyashova, the exhibition brings together 44 Israeli artists whose works—spanning painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation, textile art, performance, and other contemporary practices—explore our relationship with time, space, and impermanence.
In a world shaped by war, migration, climate disruption, and profound social transformation, permanence is giving way to a succession of transitional states. The participating artists examine spaces we inhabit without ever truly settling into them—places that offer protection while constantly reminding us of their temporary nature.
The exhibition also explores invisible spaces: those of memory, exile, waiting, vulnerability, and inner transformation. The works address themes ranging from migration, temporary housing, refugee camps, shelters, and waiting zones to pregnancy, birth, illness, recovery, and the psychological changes that mark the course of a lifetime.
"A place is not simply a container," explain curators Vera Geylis and Vera Konyashov. "It is itself an embodiment of temporality. Its future is already known; its disappearance is inevitable. This awareness resonates with each artwork, giving the exhibition a physical, performative, and symbolic dimension."
Several works engage directly with the architecture of the building, responding to its history, future, and social function. Others examine the traces left behind by those who temporarily occupy a place, whether a home, a shelter, or a public space.
The opening reception, scheduled for July 9 at 7:30 p.m., will itself take the form of an evolving artwork. Ephemeral installations, live performances, and video projections will activate the entire building, transforming it into an artistic laboratory for one evening. A special video program on July 28 will extend this exploration of time, movement, and the moving image.
Running through August 13, 2026, "Temporary Spaces" promises to be one of Tel Aviv's most compelling cultural events of the summer, offering a thoughtful and deeply human reflection on life in an age defined by uncertainty.
