At a moment that highlighted the close link between history, innovation, and progress, His Royal Highness Prince Sultan Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz, founder and president of the Saudi Aviation Club, unveiled his latest book, My Life on Wings - An Aviator's Journey, at the 2024 Airshow. The announcement was made amidst the lively atmosphere of the largest aerospace event in the Middle East, drawing leaders and aviation enthusiasts from around the world.
The book tells the story of Saudi Arabia's first steps in aviation, shining a light on the historic gift of a DC-3 aircraft from the U.S. President to the late King Abdulaziz. It recounts the journey of Captain Joe Grant, who delivered the plane, and the visionary foresight of King Abdulaziz, who preserved the aircraft as a symbol of unity and progress for the Kingdom. The book features rare photographs of the DC-3 and exclusive information about its central role in the Kingdom's aviation history. Readers are taken on a visual and narrative journey through the past, while appreciating the foresight of King Abdulaziz and the ongoing contributions of the aviation sector to Saudi Vision 2030.
“This is not just the story of an airplane; it’s the story of dreams taking flight, of unity forged by innovation, and of a future envisioned by our founding king Abdulaziz,” said Prince Sultan Bin Salman. “The launch of this book at Sand & Fun 2024, surrounded by the spirit of aviation excellence, is a great pride for me and for the Kingdom.”
The announcement was made during the "Hangar Talks," one of the most anticipated educational sessions of the airshow. HRH Prince Sultan joined other aviation experts to share the historical significance of aviation in the renaissance of Saudi Arabia. The event served as a bridge between the rich heritage detailed in the book and the dynamic innovations showcased at Sand & Fun 2024.
Attendees were treated to thrilling air demonstrations, including those by the Saudi Falcons and the Phoenix Paramotors team from Poland, as well as interactive exhibits showcasing the latest advancements in aviation. The synergy between the past, present, and future was palpable as families explored the "Avitainment Zone" with virtual paragliding, rocket-building workshops, and flight simulators.
