Faced with the growing threat of wildfires driven by climate change, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), a global leader in aerospace and defense, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Fire Free Forests (3F) to co-develop a next-generation aerial firefighting platform. This groundbreaking solution will be based on a specially modified version of the 767BDSF, the cargo aircraft developed by IAI’s Bedek division.

This collaboration marks a significant advancement in the fight against large-scale wildfires, which have become increasingly frequent and devastating in recent years. By combining IAI’s expertise in aerospace engineering and aircraft conversion with 3F’s strategic vision and operational know-how, the partnership aims to deliver a technological, effective, and large-scale response to a now global challenge.

“As wildfires become more frequent and intense due to climate change, the need for large-scale, innovative solutions has never been more urgent. We are proud to put our technological expertise at the service of saving lives, and we look forward to working with 3F on this important project,” said Boaz Levy, President and CEO of IAI.

The joint platform will be built around several key components. At its core will be the 767FF Fire-Fighter, a modified cargo aircraft capable of carrying up to 40 tons of fire retardant and releasing it with exceptional precision. Onboard, advanced sensors will allow for real-time detection of fire hotspots, detailed analysis of wind and terrain conditions, and strategic mission guidance. These capabilities will be coordinated through a centralized Command and Control Center, ensuring seamless coordination between aerial operations and ground teams.

Fire Free Forests will lead the commercial strategy of the project. The company is developing a subscription-based model, targeting governments, climate resilience programs, and reinsurance sector players. 3F will also oversee financial planning, economic structuring, and coordination with public institutions on a global scale.

“We aim to provide the most efficient and scalable response to mega-fires. This solution relies on a fleet of very high-capacity aircraft, but also on a shared model between major public stakeholders, combining assistance and insurance. With IAI, we are confident in our ability to build a high-impact public good,” said Marc Berdugo, founding partner of Fire Free Forests.

The deployment plan includes a phased implementation, with the establishment of several operational centers in high-risk regions such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and Southern Europe.

Founded in 1953, IAI is today one of Israel’s largest technology employers. It provides cutting-edge solutions across aerospace, space, naval, cyber, and homeland security sectors, serving both civil and military customers worldwide.
