The Israel Defense Prize 2026 was awarded this week to several technological projects developed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Mossad, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), the Israeli Ministry of Defense, and the country’s leading defense industries. The prestigious award recognizes innovations that have made exceptional contributions to Israel’s national security and technological superiority.
The ceremony was attended by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Defense Minister Israel Katz, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, and Director General of the Ministry of Defense Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram. Mossad Director Roman Gofman and Shin Bet Director David Zini were also present.
This year’s awards were heavily influenced by lessons learned from recent operations against Iran and its regional allies.
An Israeli Weapon System at the Heart of the Campaign Against Iran
Among the five winning projects was a fully Israeli-designed and manufactured weapons system whose details remain classified. According to defense officials, the system played a central role in operations conducted against Iran and achieved exceptional operational results.
The award was jointly granted to the Israeli Air Force, the Ministry of Defense, and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
The second award-winning project was a highly classified operational system developed for the Mossad. Security officials stated that it significantly enhances intelligence collection capabilities and the execution of complex missions around the world.
Described by the award committee as an “extraordinary technological achievement,” the project was developed through cooperation between the Mossad, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), and the Israeli Air Force.
Ofek Satellites Strengthen Israeli Intelligence Capabilities
The Ofek 13 and Ofek 19 satellite programs were also honored. These next-generation satellites provide Israeli intelligence agencies with continuous, high-quality strategic intelligence.
The committee highlighted major advances in performance, miniaturization, and intelligence-gathering capabilities. The project involved IAI’s Missile and Space Division, ELTA Systems, the Ministry of Defense’s Space Directorate, and Unit 9900 of the IDF Intelligence Directorate.

Unit 81, one of the IDF’s most secretive technological units, also received an award for an innovative solution addressing a previously unprecedented operational challenge.
Developed in cooperation with Unit 8200, the IDF’s Command and Control Systems Directorate, and Israel Aerospace Industries, the technology solved a problem that had long been considered highly complex within Israel’s defense establishment.
The fifth awarded project involved advanced electronic warfare systems designed to preserve Israel’s aerial superiority. According to military officials, these capabilities played a decisive role in recent operations by preventing the interception of manned aircraft and ensuring the Israeli Air Force’s freedom of action.
The project was developed through collaboration between the Ministry of Defense’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), the Mossad, the Israeli Air Force, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Elisra (an Elbit Systems company), and Unit 8200.
“Israeli Innovation Is Invaluable”
In his remarks, President Isaac Herzog praised the “creativity, courage, and ingenuity” that characterize Israel’s defense establishment.
“In a constantly changing world, the value of Israeli innovation is invaluable. We must continue to preserve our adaptability, encourage diversity of talent, and maintain the unique Israeli spirit that lies behind every achievement,” Herzog said.
Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized that the combination of cutting-edge technology and the courage of Israel’s military personnel had enabled the country to achieve unprecedented operational, technological, and intelligence superiority across multiple fronts, including Iran, Lebanon, and the Gaza Strip.
Established by David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first Prime Minister and Defense Minister, the Israel Defense Prize has for decades honored innovations that have transformed the country’s military capabilities. Previous recipients include landmark projects such as the Gabriel missile, the Merkava tank, the Trophy active protection system, and the Arrow, David’s Sling, and Iron Dome missile defense systems.
