Israel: innovative technology to cool data centers

The Israeli startup ZutaCore, founded in 2016 by Freibach and Nahson Eadelson, members of the Bror Hayil kibbutz (near Sderot), has developed a unique technology for cooling data centers using a non-conductive liquid directly on the computer chips.

The process is environmentally friendly and allows saving millions of shekels per year. The liquid absorbs the heat from the chips, cooling them in a way that consumes less than 50% of the electricity required by air conditioning. The liquid cooling solution, named "HyperCool," uses a highly efficient two-phase boiling and condensation process that removes large amounts of heat from processors and servers.

The two-phase liquid cooling technology unleashes sustainable cooling power by tripling processing capacity and reducing the space required for conventional data center cooling systems by half. In addition to maximizing efficiency, "HyperCool" is scalable, easy to implement, and guarantees consistent performance regardless of climate or location. The system is capable of cooling 120 kW of power.

It is a complete hardware system enhanced by a software-defined platform (SDC) to cool any chip, at any density, without the risk of melting. No water is used in the cooling system, so the equipment is protected from corrosion and other water-related threats.

With the advent of processors exceeding 400 W available commercially, data centers are facing the dilemma of cooling intense thermal loads in environments typically designed for much lower consumption chips. The dielectric cold plates of "HyperCool" attach to any data center processor to eliminate hot spots resulting from insufficient airflow, regardless of the environment or the power of the case.

So far, ZutaCore has raised approximately $60 million, including $22 million last year. Among the major investors are the Mitsubishi Group, the German company Rittal, and Marius Nacht. ZutaCore's employees have faced numerous challenges over the past year as residents of the Gaza border area, with Hamas terrorists specifically targeting their offices, halting their activities for several months.
