For the first time in 10 years, Israel's largest Bedouin city, Rahat, will participate in the “From Jaffa to Agripas” festival in Jerusalem, on June 30 and July 2. The Arab-Jewish Alyamama Theater in Rahat, in collaboration with the Jerusalem Dance Academy troupe, creates a sublime and innovative show that mixes dance with prose.
The performance “Yam Rahat” (contraction of Yerushalaim/Rahat), lasting approximately 25 minutes, combines the texts, written by Kaid AbuLatif, co-founder of Alyamama, artistic director and actor, songs and modern dances. 11 dancers from the Jerusalem Dance Academy and two actors from Alyamama will offer the public a moment suspended in time.
“The project was born from cooperation between the arts of dance and theater, and from collaboration between Jews and Arabs, which we already support with Alyamama, created in 2021 following the riots in mixed cities in Israel. I strongly believe in the power of creation to bring people together; the dancers are Jewish while the actors are Arab and this mixture must set an example,” said Daniel Alter, executive director.
“Through the texts written by Kaid, the actors of Alyamama, Rawada Suleiman and Salama Abu Kayen, will bring on stage the Bedouin side, the Negev, the sunsets, the dreams, the disappointments but also the sorrow and the joy, so many themes that reflect the life of the Bedouin community,” added Daniel.
More than ten works, local and foreign, will be presented during the festival while the 100th anniversary of the founding of Mahane Yehuda Market will be celebrated.
Since 2014, the c.a.t.a.m.o.n Dance Group has organized “From Jaffa to Agripas”, a contemporary dance festival in the Mahane Yehuda market. More than 80 original dances have been presented over the years throughout the market, in businesses and surrounding buildings. Each year, Israeli and international artists are invited to present a variety of conceptual events to the general public. The festival creates a unique local experience in Jerusalem nightlife.
“Yam Rahat” was produced by Ronen Izhaki and Zohar Karny under the direction of Daniel Alter. The show will take place at 105 Jaffa Street at the Brown Machane Yehuda Hotel in Jerusalem on June 30 and July 2 at 9:30 p.m.
